Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 10-Inch Sharpening SteelCustomer Review: Warning: Grooved Summary: 2 StarsThis is a grooved, rather than a straight steel. This means it is taking significant portions of metal off your edge with each pass (that's the job of a sharpening tool, not a honing tool!). The grooves risk significant damage to your blade. The grooving is sort of apparent from the photo, but it should be made more explicit. Consider yourself forewarned!
Customer Review: best value sharpening steel Summary: 5 StarsI've gone through several powered and manual sharpening tools looking for something that will put an edge on my knives that my father, a retired chef, won't scoff at, and this is by far the best I've found. And when you factor in its low price, this steel is an unbeatable value. I was able to put a razor sharp edge on everything from a 30 year old chinese cleaver to my wife's expensive Henkels to a set of as-seen-on-tv "never needs sharpening" knives using this steel. I was surprised by how quickly it sharpens - just takes a few passes. It does take off quite a bit of metal, works better for sharpening than honing. I'll keep my ceramic rod for honing.
Customer Review: Excellent value, does the job. Summary: 5 StarsI was a bit skeptical when placing the order since the price was quite low, and I was not sure if it's going to suffer from quality issues or if it's going to do the job.
However, the product arrived and appeared to be well made (I'm a bit obsessive about trivial details, and I do prefer walnut over plastic), and it sharpened my generic kitchen knife (no fancy japanese hardened steel knives here) with just a few swipes. It is also quite long enough for my knives without being too long and unwieldy. For my knife it appeared to take off some metal as some fine shards did show, and after longer use there was a thin coat of grey powder in its grooves (that can be cleaned off easily).
The walnut handle/guard has a reasonably good grip. It seems to do the job quick and well without making a fuss. It is also fairly hefty and feels right with the sharpening motion. It is a no-nonsense tool that has a very reasonable price. I'm very happy with it.
Customer Review: Sharpening Steel Summary: 5 StarsProduct was delivered in good time. I had Chicago Cutlery Sharpening Steel that lasted me about 30 years. I think this one will last as well. Great product.
Customer Review: Good value for low price. Summary: 4 StarsDoes the job as advertised. The wood handle could be a bit longer. As it is, suits smaller hands well. Sharpens fine knives easily. The grind on the steel seems just right.
